Careers made in NRS

In this series, we interview our NRS alumni to learn about their study experience, their thesis topic, and how it links to their career development.

Lilin Zhang

ITC fellows have published numerous high-level papers in my research field which achieved worldwide impact. Therefore [...] I present my work with the pride of belonging to ITC.

During my PhD, I used open-source biodiversity data to study macrofungal diversity and distribution in Europe. In Europe, especially nowadays, there is an increase of open-source data, for example from citizen science and even museums. That data has invaluable information about species distribution, and we have been able to gather it from 8 different European countries

Ama Serwah Boakye, completed an internship at the University of California Santa Barbara for her MSc research. Her work was selected to be presented at the 2023 SPIE conference in Amsterdam, and she aims to continue developing through a PhD candidature.

The whole experience with the ITC Faculty was really enriching. When you study here, you are expected to carry the load of the study, but everyone is going to help you navigate and guide you if you get blocked. This process has improved my confidence as a professional.

Zijing Wu, graduated with a cum laude from the MSc in GIS and RS (Natural Resources Management track). She has recently published a study, as first author, demonstrating the capability of satellite remote sensing and AI techniques to automatically count very large populations of mammals across a highly heterogeneous landscapes. For this, she has collaborated with a network international experts from U.S., U.K. and Kenya

My two years at ITC were unforgettable and it is an especially important milestone in my life path. It was my first time to come abroad and my first time to make international friends. They showed me there are so many ways of living, and there is never an end to learning. ITC creates a very warm and inclusive environment. It also opened a new career path for me and empowered me to explore infinite possibilities.

Finn Münch, currently finishing his thesis for the GEM MSc. Although his MSc programme started in Sweden, he travelled to Vietnam to collect data for his thesis. He is currently in the Netherlands, finishing the programme and reflecting on the next steps in his bright career

The academic experience in the GEM MSc was great, because the ITC Faculty - University of Twente has huge expertise in remote sensing as well as ecosystem modelling. It was perfect for me because that's what I wanted to get deeper knowledge on after my undergraduate course.
