VICI Toolbox

Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

The e-Shape project (H2020) provides a financial service delivery to smallholder farmers in Ethiopia with a geodata-driven risk-mitigation (insurance) product that offers a basic safety net to protect them against weather related perils. This toolbox is a continuation of the ‘VICI’ single-peril drought-insurance product from the G4AW funded GIACIS project (Geodata for Innovative Agricultural Credit Insurance Schemes) which targeted Ethiopian small holder farmers in four key-regions of Ethiopia: Oromia, SNNPR, Amhara and Tigray, cultivating tef, wheat, barley, maize and sorghum.

This toolbox version is used to prepare the NDVI-index from the Copernicus NDVI product disseminated through the EUMETCAST system, currently using the Sentinel-3 OLCI instrument on a dekadal basis. The toolbox facilitates import, aggregation, pre-processing and temporal filtering routines (incorporating future NDVI dekadal climatology time steps). The results are transformed to a table to be ingested in the insurance scheme by the Ethiopian partners.

Example of fully pre-processed dekadal NDVI map.

Furthermore, the toolbox allows calculation / visualization of the indemnity, the pay-out in case of crop damage due to weather related perils.

Example of indemnity map showing the pay-out (in %) over Ethiopia if a farmer would have taken an insurance for the early-short and early-long agricultural season in Ethiopia over 2017. The drought-affected areas are resulting in high pay-outs.

Another activity is the development of a weather App using data from the Global Forecasting System allowing stakeholders to retrieve important agricultural weather related information, like precipitation, (minimum and maximum) temperature, relative humidity, potential and actual evapotranspiration, for the next 10 days ahead. These parameters are processed on a daily basis once the GFS forecast data becomes available.
