Career perspective

Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

As a graduate of the Master’s in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation with a specialisation in Urban Planning and Management, you can look forward to an exciting career as a GIS analyst, urban planner, geodata engineer, transport analyst, GIS consultant in urban and environmental planning, sustainable urban development consultant, geospatial data scientist, urban data analyst, and urban mobility specialist, to name but a few. Another option is to continue with a PhD or PDEng programme. Or what about starting up your own business?

Type of degree

Upon completing the Master's with a specialisation in Urban Planning and Management, you will receive a Master’s degree in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc). Your specialisation will be mentioned on your diploma supplement, highlighting your specialised knowledge and skills in the field of urban planning and management.

Job opportunities

As a graduate of this specialisation, you have in-depth knowledge and skills in using geo-information to address urban planning and management problems and carry out spatial analyses to understand and address urban processes. You know how to integrate geo-information and geospatial technologies to help make cities sustainable, inclusive, competitive, compact, and resilient. With this expertise, you will be well-prepared to work at research institutes and public agencies in the field of urban planning, infrastructure and transport, architecture, and land administration, universities, and non-governmental organisations, among others.

UT alumni with this specialisation currently work at various organisations in different roles, for example:
  • GIS analyst and urban planner, GeoJunxion
  • Monitoring specialist, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
  • GIS consultant, UN-Habitat

Whichever career path you choose, you will be sure to find exciting career opportunities at various private and public organisations around the world. You can work at governments, for instance, at the Ministry of Works and Housing, Ghana or the National Land Use Planning Commission, Tanzania; at international non-governmental organisations such as Despacio; at research institutes and think tanks such as the African Population and Health Research Centre, the Centre for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE), or the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency; at earth observation service providers such as NEO Netherlands, at international non-profit organisations such as UN-Habitat and Climate Centre, among others.

Start a business

Do you have a great business idea? At the University of Twente, you can turn it into reality! At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. In fact, UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and the start-up hub on campus.

Post-master opportunities

Instead of pursuing a professional career right after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt for an academic career by completing a PhD or a PDEng. A PDEng programme is more practically oriented and aligned with direct problem solving and addressing design needs of a particular industry whereas a PhD programme is more focused on research. You can follow both types of programmes at the Twente Graduate School (TGS).

CONTINUE AS A RESEARCHER: OBTAIN A PHD

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after completing your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS). This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth at one of our research institutes. Obtaining your PhD earns you the title of Doctor (Dr).
