Career perspectives

Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

As a graduate of the Master’s in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation with a specialisation in Specialisation Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction, you can look forward to an exciting career as a geospatial hazard and risk information expert, spatial analyst and planner, geoscientist, geotechnical engineer, environmental consultant, GIS analyst, geological technician, production geologist, or geological engineer, to name but a few. Another option is to continue with a PhD programme. Or what about starting up your own business?

Type of degree

Upon completing the Master's with a specialisation in Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction, you will receive a Master’s degree in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc). Your specialisation will be mentioned on your diploma supplement, highlighting your specialised knowledge and skills in the field of natural hazards and disaster risk reduction.

 Job opportunities

As a graduate of this specialisation, you have in-depth knowledge and skills related to earth science and engineering concepts, so you understand and can predict natural hazard processes. You know how to conduct geospatial data analyses and model methods to evaluate how natural hazards and disaster risk may change. With this expertise, you will be well-prepared to work at government agencies that conduct research in natural hazards, research institutes focusing on disaster risk reduction, the Red Cross, international non-governmental organisations, engineering firms that play a role in reducing the risk of landslides or floods, and humanitarian aid organisations, among others.

UT alumni with this specialisation currently work at various organisations in different roles, for example:
  • GIS research engineer at HawarIT
  • Research Associate at the Geoinformatics Centre at the Asian Institute of Technology
  • Geological engineer at the Danish Nature Agency

Start a business

Do you have a great business idea? At the University of Twente, you can turn it into reality! At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. In fact, UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and the start-up hub on campus.

You can use your master’s research - or prototypes from the research you have done - to start your own business just like Rodrigo Lopez who launched IDA&RM! Will you be next?

Post-master opportunities

Instead of pursuing a professional career right after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt for an academic career by completing a PhD or a PDEng. A PDEng programme is more practically oriented and aligned with direct problem solving and addressing design needs of a particular industry whereas a PhD programme is more focused on research. You can follow both types of programmes at the Twente Graduate School (TGS).

Continue as a researcher: obtain a PhD

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) entails studying and carrying out research in a particular area for four years. You can do this within one of our research groups or our structured PhD programmes. An integral part of a PhD is writing your PhD thesis and presenting and defending your research publicly. Obtaining a PhD gives you the title Doctor (Dr).
