Career Perspective

Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

As a graduate of the Master’s in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation with a specialisation in Geo-Information Management for Land Administration, you can look forward to an exciting career as a surveyor, land administrator, conservation land manager, database engineer, GIS analyst, cartographer, technical adviser, land-use planner, land manager, land law examiner, and cadastral and geodetic engineer, to name but a few. Another option is to continue with a PhD or PDEng programme. Or what about starting up your own business?

Type of degree

Upon completing the Master's with a specialisation in Geo-Information Management for Land Administration, you will receive a Master’s degree in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc). Your specialisation will be mentioned on your diploma supplement, highlighting your specialised knowledge and skills in the field of geo-information management for land administration.

Job opportunities

As a graduate of this specialisation, you have in-depth knowledge and skills in using cadastral intelligence to design and apply responsible land administration solutions. You know how to apply Fit-For-Purpose land administration and design responsible land administration systems. With this expertise, you will be well-prepared to work at cadastral organisations, ministries of lands and human settlements development, national land secretariats, national mapping agencies, and universities, among others.

UT alumni with this specialisation currently work at various organisations in different roles, for example:
  • Senior technical consultant at the Netherlands' Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency
  • GIS analyst for land management at the National Housing Trust (NHT)
  • Land surveyor at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Tanzania

Whichever career path you choose, you will be sure to find exciting career opportunities at various private and public organisations around the world. You can work at national governments, for instance, at the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, or the Ministry of Land; at international non-governmental organisations such as UN Habitat and the World Bank; at national mapping agencies such as the National Land Survey in Finland or the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy in Germany; at ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability which is a global network of more than 2500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development; at consultancy firms for web mapping solutions such as Webmapper, among others.

Start a business

Do you have a great business idea? At the University of Twente, you can turn it into reality! At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. In fact, UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and the start-up hub on campus.

You can use your master’s research - or prototypes from the research you have done - to start your own business just like Henry Makumbi who launched Rabboni Group Ltd: a regional grain agro-processing and distribution business based in Uganda! Will you be next?

Post-master opportunities

Instead of pursuing a professional career right after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt for an academic career by completing a PhD or a PDEng. A PDEng programme is more practically oriented and aligned with direct problem solving and addressing design needs of a particular industry whereas a PhD programme is more focused on research. You can follow both types of programmes at the Twente Graduate School (TGS).

CONTINUE AS A RESEARCHER: OBTAIN A PHD

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after completing your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS). This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth at one of our research institutes. Obtaining your PhD earns you the title of Doctor (Dr).
