NEDtalk: Dealing with spatial big data - tools and services for spatial data scientists

The ITC alumni in Indonesia are organizing a series of seminars (NEDtalk), which mainly focus on their professional experience in geo-information and earth observation technologies as well as current topics in these fields. On June 19th, 2020, dr.ing. Serkan Girgin MSc who is leading the activities of the Center of Experience in Big Geodata Science (CRIB), will be a guest speaker and give a talk big geospatial data analysis tools and services.

Dealing with spatial big data: tools and services for spatial data scientists

Abstract: This talk will provide an overview of the distributed file systems, databases, computational frameworks, and machine learning libraries currently available as open-source or provided by selected service providers (e.g. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft), with a special emphasis on (geo)spatial big data capabilities. Cloud computing platforms specifically designed for processing geospatial data (e.g. Google Earth Engine) will also be covered. Spatial and spatio-temporal data support in such systems and tools range from no direct support to full compliance with OGC standards. Depending on the implementation details and the underlying components used, their performance and more importantly degree of accuracy vary widely. Sometimes unexpected and hidden limitations in the existing systems (e.g. analysis accuracy, continuity of the community support) and benefits of early involvement in product development (e.g. trusted tester agreements) will be discussed.
