UT in the media awards 2023

Today, as is tradition, the UT in the Media awards ceremony took place in the second week of January. The executive board presented the awards to the winners in the Carre and Langezijds buildings over coffee and cake. The award consisted of a certificate and a gift card. On Campus, the congratulatory moments consisted of short talks on the winners' research topics.

Student team Solar Team Twente won in the student category. Solar Team Twente came second at last year's solar racing world championships in Australia. Naturally, this was followed closely by various international media, including The Daily Mail UK and Cosmos Magazine Australia, and in the Netherlands by Innovation Origins and newspaper AD, among others.

Junior talent in the media award

The Junior talent in the media award went to Mechanical Engineering student Dominiek Spin (22 years old) (ET), for his calculation tool that allows a student to see what they are losing in interest on their student debt. From the website of DUO, the Education Executive Agency, Spin was none the wiser. "Time to develop something myself," he thought. His calculation tool got him attention on RTL Nieuws and RTV Oost.

Media Awards Faculties

The third place was for university lecturer in political science Martin Rosema (BMS), who spoke several times to media about the elections. Second place went to René Torenvlied (BMS), who appeared frequently in the media with his research on the Enschede fireworks disaster, such as the NOS. Bram Nauta (EEMCS) won the Simon Stevin Prize in 2023 and was extra visible in various media partly because of this, such as in this great article in the Volkskrant headlined: Dutch 'Nobel Prize' winner Bram Nauta: 'I want to play, something wonderful usually comes out of that.'

Social Media Award

The Social Media Award was for Dr Eefje Hendriks (ITC). Hendriks is very active on X and LinkedIN with posts about her research on natural disasters. She also spoke at the Zwarte Cross last summer titled: Rebuilding after a natural disaster is more than pitching a tent!

The award for Torenvlied was received by Simon Couwenberg and the award for Hendriks was received by Himanshu Rana and Mark van der Meijde.
