A paper written by a team from the ITC Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente has been awarded as the Best Research and Review Paper Award for 2018 by the Editorial Board of the Journal of Spatial Science. The award recipient will receive a cheque for AUD$1000 and a certificate recognising their achievement. Amongst the writers are MSc alumni Mr. Yismaw Abera (Ethiopia), Dr. Mila Koeva, Dr. Rohan Bennett and Prof. Chrit Lemmen.
Faster and cheaper mapping
The title of the paper is “A procedure for semi-automated cadastral boundary feature extraction from high-resolution satellite imagery”. The focus is on using high-resolution satellite imagery and readily available feature extraction tools and software to support faster and cheaper mapping of the millions of unrecorded land interests in Sub-Saharan African countries. Spatial documentation of land rights is known to be a key component in supporting delivery of sustainable development.
The ITC team’s concept is part of a broader suite of automated cadastral boundary extraction projects collaboratively being undertaken by the PGM and EOS departments at ITC – including Sophie Crommelinck’s work in the its4land project.
The best paper award is determined based on the votes casted by the members of the Editorial Board. An official announcement of the Award will be made in the September 2018 issue of the Journal of Spatial Science.
