Alireza Ajami wins the 2018 GIN-NCG Thesis Prize

This year’s winner of the GIN-NCG Thesis Prize is Alireza Ajami, as announced by the geo-information trade association Geo-Informatie Nederland (GIN) on Monday night during the annual GIN Gala in Den Bosch.

Sieb Dijkstra, jury chairman, adds: “Since both Bachelor’s as well as Master’s research projects were presented, we decided to do our evaluation based on an extra criterion. Besides content, presentation and its contribution to the geo-information field, we also looked at whether the project contributes to solving a societal problem. That’s why we thought Alireza Ajami’s investigation ‘Analysing the relationship between image-based features and socio-economic variations of slums’ was the best.”

New talent

The search for the best thesis was brought into existence to discover new talent and to attract the next generation to the geo-information domain. This prize puts fresh graduates in the spotlight. Geo-related programme coordinators were allowed to submit two theses per programme. Ajami’s thesis came out on top as the best of the five that were nominated. The jury was very impressed with the quality of the nominated thesis projects.
