Books cover virtually any topic, fact or fiction. For research purposes, you will probably be looking for books that synthesize all the information on one topic to support a particular argument or thesis. More and more books are also published in electronic format, this is especially the case with reports.
Book chapters are original contributions that are collected into an edited book on a specific topic.
These are typically invited by the book editor and may undergo some peer review; certainly they are edited. Often they are review articles or summaries. Quality control is not as rigid as for journal articles
