The ITC library supports students and staff with information management. An important tool for this is the software program Endnote. With Endnote you can create and manage your personal reference database. Millions of researchers, scholarly writers, students, and librarians use EndNote to search online bibliographic databases, organize their references, images and PDFs in any language, and create bibliographies and figure lists instantly. Instead of spending hours typing bibliographies, or using index cards to organize their references, they do it the easy way by using EndNote! And EndNote Web is included with EndNote so you can collaborate with others easily. EndNote for Windows and Macintosh is a valuable all-in-one tool.

There are more tools like EndNote but ITC decided to support Endnote actively. Other programs are for instance Zotero (www.zotero.org/) and Mendeley (www.mendeley.com/). Both are open source software; Zotero is a Firefox extension.

Description of EndNote

Basic functions of Endnote are:

  1. Database manager: Organize references, images, PDFs and other files in a personal library:
    • create an unlimited number of libraries of any size
    • group references
    • find full text articles automatically
    • import and Search PDFs
    • store PDF and other files with your EndNote library
    • organize image files.

  2. Search bibliographic databases on the Internet and import references downloaded from bibliographic sources, e.g. Science Direct, Web of Science, SpringerLink, Geobase etc. using Endnote’s import filters.

  3. Watch bibliographies appear as you write; create in-text citations and bibliographies (or reference lists) for your MSc thesis, for a journal article or for a book. EndNote comes with a great variety of bibliographic styles for a variety of journals and publishers.

  4. Collaborate using EndNote Web, the Web-based research and writing component of EndNote.
