A course for water professionals organized by TCBF jointly with the World Bank.

Base-line mapping of small water bodies with optical and SAR data

The 7th TCBF Training Course was held from 13 to 24 May 2013 in Lusaka, Zambia and was organized in cooperation with the World Bank.

Based on the good experiences we gained on the 5th Training Course in November 2012, the 7th TCBF Training Course was also organized in Lusaka, Zambia in cooperation with the World Bank. A total of 28 professionals from the Department of Water Affairs were trained: 16 from eleven different regional offices and 12 from Lusaka. The training was tailored for practitioners in the water sector. Lectures provided theoretical background on Earth Observation, especially on microwave techniques with emphasis on SAR. Hands-on exercises covered: i) accessing both optical (Landsat) and SAR (Envisat) satellite data, ii) fieldwork to obtain outline and bathymetry data from small water bodies iii) SAR and optical data processing iv) small water body base map preparation using optical images and monitoring based on SAR data.
