ITC's investigations in China's coalfields

The International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) has been involved in coal fire research since 1988 working in close cooperation with European, Chinese, Indian, African and American partners. Though at ITC we have investigated the global nature of the problem, the main work has been focused on the coal fields in China.

From the side of ITC the leader of the venture of coal fire investigations in China was Prof. Dr. J.L. van Genderen. His leadership saw the successful completion of two projects:

  1. the Xinjiang Project and
  2. the Ningxia Project.

At present there is an ongoing project in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) also being conducted in North China.

In the past 15 years ITC's research efforts in the field of coal fire studies has lead to a deeper and thorough understanding of the problem, scientific ways to assess and investigate the problem, and modern techniques to tackle the problem at grass root level. Most of the research findings are well documented in the wealth of its published literature.
