Last Sunday (20 November) the COP27 Climate Summit ended in Sharm el Sheikh, two days in overtime, establishing a new fund to compensate developing countries for “Loss and Damage” due to climate change, but failing to agree on new measures to reduce emissions.
Maarten van Aalst, professor of climate and disaster resilience at ITC, attended COP27 as part of the IFRC delegation to the UNFCCC, and witnessed the frantic negotiations into the final night.
In this lunchtalk he will provide a glimpse behind the scenes of these international negotiations, and will provide a perspective on the outcomes of COP27, what they mean for the world, and what’s next (including the role of science).
