Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

Upon request (email to alumni-itc@utwente.nl) we will send you a copy of this statement.

With effect from 1 January 2010, the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), established in 1950, became embedded as a faculty in the University of Twente (UT), and is henceforth to be known as the

FACULTY OF GEO-INFORMATION SCIENCE AND EARTH OBSERVATION (ITC) OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE.

ITC has changed from being an independent institute of international education to being a faculty of the University of Twente. The University of Twente has become the legal entity.

The legal right to award Master’s degrees was transferred from ITC to the University of Twente on 1 January 2010. This will not affect the recognition by the Dutch government of the degrees issued by ITC before that date.

Recognition by the Dutch government

For recognition and funding by the Dutch government, all Master‘s programmes need to be accredited by the Netherlands-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). All Master’s programmes from ITC are accredited and registered in the Netherlands Central Register of Higher Education Programmes (CROHO). As a consequence they are formally recognized by the Dutch government as academic programmes leading to recognized diplomas and degrees. This has been the case since 2002. Before that date the Ministry used to co-sign ITC diplomas.

The Master’s programmes from ITC are listed in the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes.

• The Master of Science degree programme in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation is registered under number 75014 and is presently formally accredited until 29-06-2021, with accreditation renewable for a further period of six years based on an external assessment

• The former Master degree programme in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation is registered under number 70043 with since 1 January 2016 the new name Applied Geoinformatics with a valid accreditation until 29-10-2021.

European recognition

European recognition of degrees is based on the European Convention on the Academic Recognition of University Qualifications of 1961, the Lisbon Convention of 1997 and the Bologna Declaration of 1999. These declarations, which have been ratified by most European countries, state that each country shall recognize qualifications as similar to the corresponding qualifications in its own system unless it can show that there are substantial differences between its own qualifications and the qualifications for which recognition is sought. Recognition of these qualifications can be employed to access further higher education studies, to use an academic title or to enter the labour market in another European country. Each country has specific procedures in this respect.

The University of Twente is a member of the European University Association (EUA) and a partner in the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). The University of Twente is listed in the UNESCO/IAU International Handbook of Universities and the World Higher Education Database.

Worldwide recognition

As regards worldwide recognition of the degrees, the degree programmes are listed in the UNESCO/IAU International Handbook of Universities and the World Higher Education Database.
