But in the field, you hear what is really going on", says Tom Veldkamp, ​​Dean of the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). He calls himself a realistic idealist where development cooperation is concerned. But actually, development cooperation is not the right word, he believes.     During the last 50 years, nearly half of the original forests on earth have disappeared. Deforestation is responsible for approximately twelve percent of the greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. It is a major cause of climate change therefore. "Deforestation results in an increase of CO2 in the air. We want to reduce these carbon emissions", says Thomas Groen, lecturer at the University of Twente. He works at the ITC Faculty: the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation. The scientists within this faculty use earth observation techniques to collect data.

    In Africa one third of food is lost after harvest. It may seem impossible, but by providing food truck drivers with information regarding their route to be taken, food loss can be reduced. This may bring up, up to $480 mln USD. This video gives an insight into the problems faced, the amount of food lost and the opportunities this app may provide.
