The programme contained two training sessions dedicated to cover the main needs of TIGER Principal Investigators.
1. Advanced course on optical data processing for water management
A four-day short course on "Advanced optical data processing for water management" was held for selected
Principal Investigators and project members in the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town,
South Africa, on 22-25 November 2006. The participants were sponsored by the Tiger Capacity Building
Facility and other sources. Originally, fifteen projects should have been represented, but due to
some technical difficulties, not all of them could be present. Furthermore, five students were directly
sponsored by ESA, and six extra students were supported by South-Africa.
Lecturers from the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation
(www.itc.nl), in Enschede, The Netherlands,
provided the curriculum:
- Day 1: Radiative transfer and atmospheric correction of optical data
Lecturer: Prof. Wout Verhoef, professor of advanced earth observation
- Day 2: Spectral signatures and applications in land use classification and water quality
Lecturer: Dr. Zoltán Vekerdy, assistant professor
- Day 3: Time series processing and applications
Lecturer: Prof. Wout Verhoef, professor of advanced earth observation
- Day 4: Energy balance and applications in estimation of evapotranspiration
Lecturer: Prof. Bob Su, professor of spatial hydrology and water resources management
The University of Western Cape provided excellent facilities for the course. Special thanks to
Professor Xu and Mr. Nel.
2. Advanced training course on Earth observation applications for water resources management
This course was held on 26–30 November 2007 at the Regional Center for Mapping of
Resources for Development (RCMRD), Nairobi, Kenya.
Please have a look at the programme and the
practical information.
