This research program focuses on how urban governance networks can tackle urban inequalities and
household deprivations in large Indian cities, by using local spatial information infrastructure
(SII). It integrates four research questions:
- what are the 'profiles' of household deprivations, spatial concentration, and
structural constraints households face?
- how can SII become locally embedded, scaled-up and institutionalized for use by citizens
and local government?
- how is 'spatial' information socially constructed, negotiated and used in local
governance networks to reduce urban inequalities?
- which are the implications for spatial information infrastructure on the variability of
decision structure and judgment?
An inter-disciplinary team provides analytical input to form an integrated model as result,
and close cooperation with local government, planners and academics ensures transfer
of knowledge within the program.
This research is funded by NWO-WOTRO and guided by a
team of Dutch, European and Indian scholars from the University of Amsterdam,
the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)
in Enschede, the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi and the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences in Mumbai.
Each research question is addressed by PhD or post-doc research.
