Zanzibar's postal history
Zanzibar is an island in the Indian Ocean 35 kilometer off the coast of East Africa. Since 1964 it is part of Tanzania. It has an area of 1651 square kilometer and currently about 750.000 inhabitants.
Three foreign nations played a significant role in Zanzibar's postal history before its brief independence, and its current union with Tanganyika into Tanzania. The time line below provides an overview. Its history can be split into three significant periods: Early, Britsh and Recent.
