what can be done with Minard's original map?
The "Carte figurative des pertes successives en hommes de l'Armee Française dans la campagne de Russie 1812-1813". According to Tufte (1983) it is:
“possibly the best graphic ever made”
“a narrative graphic of time and space which illustrates how multivariate complexity can be subtly integrated…
…so that
viewers are hardly aware that they are looking into a world of four or five
dimensions”
A clickable Minard map. Moving the mouse over the placenames will make them more readable, and clicking the orange dots will reveal some images.
Adding a sense of time. Move the slider to see progress of the campaign (please note: in this examples there is no direct link between world time and slider time)
