From EndNote 9 to EndNote X1

10/06/2008

EndNote X1 gives much more extra features but using it remains more or less the same as with EndNote 9.

This memo does not provide a complete list of new or changed features in version X1 of EndNote but a video demonstration of the new features in EndNote X1 can be viewed on the EndNote website.

In this memo I would like to explain how the transfer to EndNote XI is going to look like for:

1 students using their desktop

2 staff and PhD students using a desktop

3 laptop users

1 Students using their desktop (i.e. the clusters):

When you start up your computer (desktop) EndNote XI will be “installed”. Your created libraries will automatically open in EndNote X1; no conversion is necessary.
After installing the new version Endnote X1, by this ‘pushed’ installation in the clusters, it might be necessary to run the Endnote config in order to get the toolbar in MS Word.
Via Start>Programs>Endnote>Configure Endnote
The ‘Endnote config’ window will open
Choose the option: "Configure EndNote components for me"
Click on next and finish this very small procedure.
(this will also remove the old Endnote 9 toolbar)
By using this any user can ‘switch on’ or ‘switch off’ the toolbar in MS-Word !!!

2 Staff and PhD students using a desktop:

Staff and PhD students should run the following file:
\\Itcnt01\Softlib\Licensed\Endnote\v11\EndnoteX1.bat
We will remove EndNote 9 from the server by the first of July so it is important that you run this file before this date.
Maybe it is also necessary to run the config as mentioned by case 1. Please follow the instructions from there if you do not have the EndNote X1 toolbar in Word.

3 Laptop users:

If you use EndNote 9 on your laptop you have to come to the library to install EndNote X1. So you can choose the moment to transfer to EndNote X1. Also Mac users can come to the library to install EndNote X1 for Mac.
You can remove EndNote 9 before installing EndNote X1 by using the Control panel and with Add or Remove programs you can remove EndNote 9. Of course your libraries will remain on your laptop and can be opened in EndNote X1 without any conversion.
Maybe it is also necessary to run the config as mentioned by case 1. Please follow the instructions from there if you do not have se the EndNote X1 toolbar in Word.

4 Everybody:

If your EndNote 9 toolbar keep appearing in Word for whatever reason please follow the next instructions:
Go to P / EndNote 9 / Usersetup
Run the following file: Remove old endnotes.bat

Some extra information on EndNote:

Millions of researchers, scholarly writers, students, and librarians use EndNote to search online bibliographic databases, organize their references, images and PDF’s in any language, and create bibliographies and figure lists instantly. Instead of spending hours typing bibliographies, or using index cards to organize their references, they do it the easy way—by using EndNote! EndNote for Windows and Macintosh is a valuable all-in-one tool that integrates the following tasks into one program:

Search bibliographic databases on the Internet

Organize references, images, PDFs and other files

Construct your paper with built-in manuscript templates

Create bibliographies as you write!

If you have any questions concerning this memo, or if you are facing troubles using EndNote XI please do not hesitate to contact me ext. 202 or koelen@itc.nl
