- The SURF website provides answers to questions about copyright in Higher
Education. The answers relate to the Dutch situation and may not always be
applicable for other countries. There are a few basic rules, which we aim to
explain. The website also provides background information and suggests practical
ways of dealing with copyright issues. Guidelines for those who want to know more
about the role of higher education institutions as regards copyright, or who need
to find concrete solutions.
The main focus will be on authors of scientific and scholarly articles or dissertations.
An author's publication often gives him/her a relationship with the institution or publisher
concerned or with other users. The website provides information on the best way to regulate
that relationship from the legal point of view for all the parties concerned, but particularly for
the author.
This website is an initiative of SURF, which hopes that it will help users to gain a better
understanding of copyright. It will assist professionals at higher education institutions
to deal with copyright issues as effectively as possible.
Besides general information about copyright, the website provides specific information for
authors of scientific/scholarly articles and dissertations. It also provides guidelines for those
who want to know more about the role of higher education institutions as regards copyright, or
who need to find concrete solutions.

onduidelijkheden. Journalisten willen extra geld voor herpublicaties op cd-roms, bibliotheken mogen
niet zomaar hun elektronisch archief kopiëren en uitgevers zijn bang voor inkomstenderving als iedereen

The author considers ways librarians can support scholars in managing the demands of copyright
so as to respond to the needs of scholarly communication. Intellectual Property Rights have become
increasingly powerful and far-reaching. This has grown to be the standard opening line of papers
in the field of law addressing issues of copyright for scientific research and scholarly publishing.
Concerns are expressed about the likelihood of preserving the public domain in the Internet era.
Currently new ways to safeguard the values and the entire potential of scholarly publishing and
communication are being explored within the framework of existing copyright law. To date copyright
law has always been reasonably balanced, weighing the interests of rights owners against those of

- SURFfoundation biedt online een gratis checklist aan met aanbevelingen voor hogeronderwijsinstellingen
die willen onderhandelen met collectieve rechtenorganisaties, zoals de BUMA/STEMRA, over het (her)gebruik van
