The most recent venture of ITC in the field
of coal fire studies are in collaborative projects with the German
and Chinese partners. In these projects the lead is taken by the
German Aerospace
Center (DLR) from the German side while ITC participates as
a sub-contractor and associated partner.

For these projects 2 completely different geographic
locations were selected:
- in the Xinjiang province
in northwestern China and
- in the northern Helan Mountains.
Within this test site especially the areas around the coal deposits
Gulaben, Riqigou and Wuda are of special interest.
At the present most of the work has been carried out for the
Xinjiang test site.

The objectives of this project can be categorised as follows:
- Precondition and spontaneous combustion
- Geometry and dynamics of in-situ coal combustion
- Innovative technologies for extinction
- Regional environmental impact
- Prevention, monitoring and early warning

As the project is still ongoing we only have some preliminary
results. Most of the image processing work till now has been carried
out on data sets from Xinijang Area. These images result from
the ITC MSc thesis (2002) of Wang Chunqing. The thesis entitled
"The study of detecting coal fires in Xinjiang using remote
sensing technology" was supervised by Ben Maathuis and Anupma
Prakash.
