Background
Anton Vrieling obtained two MSc's and a PhD from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. The MSc's were obtained in the fields of 'Tropical Land Use' and 'Geo-information Science' in 2001. During his MSc-studies Anton performed several research activities abroad, including 6-months periods at ICRISAT (Niger), CIAT (Colombia), and CCRS (Canada). An ESA-scholarship allowed him to attend in 2001 the Summer Session Programme of the International Space University, that year held in Bremen, Germany. His PhD was on the use of satellite data for soil erosion studies, and was completed in 2007. During 2006 Anton also worked at the Wageningen-based company SarVision on forest monitoring for Mozambique with MODIS time series. Between 2007 and 2009, he was with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (Ispra, Italy) in a group active on crop monitoring for areas outside Europe. Since August 2009 he is Assistant Professor at the Natural Resources department of ITC (now part of UT) in the Netherlands. His research focus at ITC is the analysis of remote sensing time series for mapping, change detection and monitoring, with applications in agriculture, biodiversity, and forestry.
