Dr. Ir. Rogier van der Velde (1980) is assistant professor at the Water Resources Department of the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation of the University of Twente. In 2004, he received his MSc degree in hydrology from the Wageningen University. His MSc research was focused on determination of the evaporation from lysimeter measurements and soil physics with an emphasis on quantification of model uncertainties due to soil hydraulic parameterizations. Also, as a part of his MSc study, Rogier did an internship at the Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory of the USDA-ARS (United States Department Agriculture Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville (Maryland, USA) from May 2003 till October 2004. During this period he used Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations for retrieving soil moisture and participated in the multi-disciplinary Soil Moisture Experiments in 2003 and 2004 (SMEX03, SMEX04).

Rogier obtained his PhD degree in November 2010 from the Twente University. His dissertation focuses on soil moisture retrieval from active microwave measurements and land surface modelling. Soil moisture retrieval has been performed using measurements collected by the NASA/George Washington University (GWU) truck mounted scatterometer during a corn growth cycle and time series of 2.5 years of Advanced SAR (ASAR) wide swath mode images acquired over the Tibetan Plateau. Further, the Noah land model was utilized in a both an offline and coupled with the Mesoscale Model version 5 (MM5) regional climate model to simulate the water and energy exchanges between the land surface and atmosphere.

His main research interests lie in: soil moisture retrieval using both active and passive microwave measurements; modelling the land-atmosphere exchange of water and energy; role of the Tibetan Plateau on the Asian monsoon system.
