Background

Picture, 4 kB

I studied biology at the University of Nijmegen where I graduated in 1991. My first job was at ITC after which I continued with a PhD study at the University of Groningen. My PhD thesis in the field of wetland ecology focused on restoration prospects for species-rich fen meadows. This concerned mainly experimental work at the crossroads of plant ecology and landscape ecology, hydrology and soil science. After various short contracts at ITC, the University of Groningen and the International Agricultural Centre (IAC) in Wageningen, I hold a permanent position at the Department of Natural Resources at ITC.

Expertise

I was involved in research and education in a wide range of ecological topics as well as in the analysis of those topics in a spatial context using remote sensing techniques and GIS.

Knowledge field/theme

Systems analysis within the field of environmental science and ecology, assessment of vegetation status, composition and structure, wetlands, bridging the gap between species' requirements and decision making for nature conservation.

Activities in education

My education focuses on:

  • Remote sensing and GIS (core modules in the Natural Resources Management Programme)
  • Systems analysis
  • Ecology
  • Mapping techniques
  • Biodiversity
  • Spatial decision making
  • In my position as study advisor for the NRM Programme I assist students during their MSc study and I am involved in organizational matters during the entire course.

Activities in research

Currently, a wide range of studies passes my desk via supervision of MSc and PhD students. One of the current fields of interest is mapping and modeling the distribution and impact of invasive species. Last year, during my sabbatical, I worked on a methodology for protected area zoning within a nature park. And as a volunteer for the Jane Goodall Institute, I focus on using spatial information for conservation and restoration of the chimpanzee habitat.

Activities in project services

I was involved in several contract teaching jobs, coordination and supervision of fieldwork within projects and organizing study tours for visiting groups.
