Duties and background

Starting October 2012 Paul van Dijk has joined the Twente Graduate School as project manager graduate policy implementation.

From June - December 2012 he is part-time engaged in the research cluster of the bureau of Strategy & Policy of the University of Twente with respect to the development of Joint Degrees.

At ITC Paul was Head Research starting March 2009, following an appointment as Director of the Graduate Programme in July 2007 with as main task the research coordination and integration of the PhD and MSc programmes. From November 2006 until July 2007 he was acting Head Education.

In 2010, the year ITC joined the University of Twente as a special spatial Faculty, a research review was carried out by an international committee according to the KNAW/VSNU/NWO standard evaluation protocol (SEP). The assessment resulted in a "very good" score for the Institute as a whole on all four criteria (quality, productivity, relevance, vitality and feasibility). From 2001-2007 Paul was Director of the Applied Earth Sciences (AES) educational programme. He was Chairman of the Working Group Curriculum Development that defined this new MSc curriculum. The new AES course that started in 2005 was built on a strong tradition in earth science education, amalgamating the existing specialisations from Enschede and the former Delft location of ITC.

After obtaining his PhD he joined the Geological Survey Division of ITC in 1987, and specialised in remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). He was engaged in postgraduate teaching and MSc and PhD research supervision concerning application of remote sensing and GIS in geological resources management, mineral exploration, basin analysis studies and environmental geology. Furthermore he has been involved in several projects concerning the establishment of and training in GIS, mine waste management, ground water resources and uncontrolled coal fires. This work has resulted in many publications and presentations, and he acted as co-promotor in 5 PhD thesis defences. Besides the scientific work, he also got involved in management: from 1989-1995 in the Management Team of the Department of Earth Resources Surveys, and from 1996-2002 in the Employees Council (OR) of ITC.

Paul's tertiary education started with a BSc (kandidaats) in Geology with Mathematics and Physics at Leiden University (the Netherlands) in 1979, followed by an MSc (doctoraal) in Structural Geology with Economic Geology and Geophysics at Utrecht University (the Netherlands) in 1983. He obtained his PhD entitled: "Copper mineralization and regional structural geology of the western Mount Isa Block, Australia" at James Cook University (Townsville, Queensland, Australia) in 1986.
