Background

Wim J. Timmermans is born in 1968, The Netherlands. He obtained his MSc degree from the Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, in 1995 in Civil Engineering. He has been teaching in remote sensing for water resources management since 1996 at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Enschede, The Netherlands and as such directed several MSc theses. He is currently affiliated as a researcher at the Water Resources Department of ITC on remote sensing based monitoring and management of hydrological processes. He acts as a referee for Remote Sensing of the Environment and is a member of AGU, SPIE and IAHS.

His research interest lies in seeking a better understanding of surface hydrology over a wide spectrum of spatial and temporal scales. He is focusing on the coupling of the Earth's surface and its atmosphere, with implications for surface hydrology, meteorology, and climate. The approach ideally combines field investigations with (numerical) simulation of the governing transport equations in order to begin to understand how we can describe surface hydrologic processes at the larger scales of modern interest.

Focus herewith is on employing remote sensing data in these simulation models for determining water and energy fluxes from field, via catchment and regional to global scales over different environmental systems. This involves the development of techniques that account for spatial variability in soil properties and vegetation type and cover, which significantly affect aforementioned fluxes at different spatial scales. Furthermore, the effects of heterogeneity of surface properties on model parameterizations of soil-vegetation-atmosphere transport processes and on information supplied by remote sensing and meteorological observations must be addressed. Meeting these objectives requires the collection of field data from interdisciplinary field experiments involving hydrology and meteorology with remote sensing, and development of theoretical and mathematical tools to quantify heterogeneity and its impact on land surface processes.

Future simulation efforts aim at bridging the gap between remote sensing based observations of water and energy at the earth's surface and in the atmospheric boundary layer. Efforts will include three-dimensional numerical solutions of turbulent flow and transport using large eddy simulation (LES) techniques that simulate water vapor and energy plumes in the atmosphere, considered along with distributed observations of surface soil moisture to describe the generation of these structures.

Activities in research and project services

Project service activities are primarily related to research activities as stated under Wims research interest. Details of these and on publications for those interested can be found in   my CV (PDF, 85 KB).

Current field studies include remote sensing measurements of multi-spectral reflectivity and thermal infrared emissivity; fast response measurements of turbulent fluctuations in water vapor concentration, temperature, and velocity, among other by means of eddy covariance and scintillometry.

As such, Wim Timmermans has participated in the SAFARI2000 project, which is a NASA initiative aimed at developing a better understanding of the southern African earth-atmosphere-human system. He has worked along the Kalahari transect in Botswana to study land-atmosphere interactions in the form of water and heat exchange, which sounds a lot less dangerous than it sometimes was...

An example of his work can be found at: ltpwww.gsfc.nasa.gov/s2k/html_pages/groups/land/flux/maun_modis_flux.html

He has also participated in the ESA Spectra Barrax Campaign (SPARC) 2004 (http://gpds.uv.es/sparc/), as an investigator in the GMES Exploitation of angular effects in land surface observations from satellites (EAGLE), EU 6th FP. His work included the validation of surface energy flux determination from ground-, air- and space-borne remote sensing observations by means of scintillometry.

He is also planning to participate in the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). The SMEX04 campaigns are part of a series of NASA experiments designed to test remote sensors of soil moisture and to support analyses of land-atmosphere interaction.
