Background

Suhyb Salama has received a PhD and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the faculty of applied science of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (2003-1999). Since 2007 he has been working with ITC, University of Twente. His academic interests are in the areas of water resources, hydrology and earth observation. His research activities are focused on aquatic ecohydrology and earth observation. This broad term encompasses remote sensing of inland and coastal waters and ecosystems responses to climate and water cycle variations.

Academic Assignments (2008-2010)
  • Coordinator of block 3 in the Water Resource and Environment Management Master of Science educational program at ITC 2007-2009.
  • From 2007 to 2010 Suhyb has supervised 21 MSc theses.

In 2009-2010 three of Suhyb�s students were awarded the following awards:

  • 52 North price
    • Zun Yin for his research on: Hydrological transport model calibration and integration by GUI in 52°North/ILWIS OS for the Dinkel River for supporting water quality studies.
    • Amos Kabo-bah for his research on: Developing water quality modelling scheme in ILWIS Open for the Dinkel River in support of climate change and adaptation studies.
  • Highest qualification for the WREM course 2008-2010 and nominated for the best thesis award
    • Matthew Ofwono for his research on: Characterization of the effects of climate variation on land surface temperature and soil moisture through stochastic analysis of long term SSM/I observations over the Tibetan plateau.

Suhyb Salama has been involved in the following research areas in the past 3 years:

  1. Atmospheric correction for turbid estuarine and coastal waters,
  2. Numerical inversion of semi analytical radiative transfer models for shallow waters,
  3. Uncertainty analysis and stochastic modelling,
  4. Optical-remote sensing and model integration,
  5. Resolving the sub-scale variability in EO-field match-up sites.

Suhyb is currently supervising five PhD researches:

  1. Water foot print and water information system,
  2. Coral reef stress assessment from Earth Observation, Indonesia,
  3. Characterization of suspended sediment in turbid water, Indonesia,
  4. Tele-connection between the Tibetan plateau and the Indian warm pool, China,
  5. Determination of the euphotic zone and eutrophication state of the Lake Naivasha, Kenya.

Previous projects
  • CHRIS/PROBA project (ESA): European space agency the objective was to improve marine dredging activities using earth observation data.
  • CASI2000-2004 project (VITO): Flemish institute for technical research. The main efforts were concentrated on hyperspectral airborne image processing and enhancements.
  • HySense project (DLR): German space center. The objective was developing an optical model for hyperspectral airborne imaging over turbid estuarine waters.
