Background

In 2004 Tom Rientjes started to work at ITC. By his long term affiliation (18 years) at Delft University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Water Resources, his background is in Water Resources Engineering and Hydrologic and Hydraulic modeling. At DUT he was responsible for the MSc-lecture ‘Modeling in Hydrology’ (since 1992) and he was involved in various PhD research projects. His key qualifications are in deterministic and stochastic modeling of hydrologic systems and encompass surface water, groundwater, catchment and river systems. His PhD at DUT was in the field of Physically Based Rainfall-Runoff modeling with a specific focus on Inverse Modeling and Automated model Calibration. Since 0ctober 2005 he is employed full time at ITC were he is involved in Water Resources Management and Quantitative Hydrology but now with a focus on assimilating remote sensing data in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.

Activities in education

At the Water Resources Department Tom is responsible for the module ‘Advanced modeling in Hydrology and Water Resources Management’. He also has an involvement in the module ‘Water Resources Management with emphasis on surface water’ that covers the basics of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. Furthermore he is involved in supervision of MSc-thesis assignments that are in the field of flood modeling, watershed hydrology, groundwater and surface water, water resources management and rainfall estimation through satellite imagery.

Activities in research

Research at the Department focuses on developing and applying hydrologic modeling approaches for improved Water Resources Management but also the modeling of calamities such as floods and droughts is at the core of the research. In general the overall objective is to improve model performance by multi-objective model calibration, by assimilating various data sources that also include RS based data in modeling and by developing novel approaches and model structures. Being at ITC, the prime focus is on assimilating satellite imagery in distributed modeling. This is also reflected in the project proposal writing for PhD-research. At ITC he supervises a number PhD projects. Projects for instance deal with simulation and forecasting of droughts through data assimilation, Rainfall estimation by means of MSG and cloud models for assimilation in novel flood forecasting, Improved water resources management through modeling and remote sensing and Multi-objective model calibration in neural network and conceptual rainfall-runoff modeling. Experience with research has also been gained at DUT where he has been involved in various (PhD) research projects such as:

  • the FP5 research project ‘Data Assimilation within a unifying modeling framework for improved river-basin water resources management’ (Contract EVK1-CT1999-00022) (1999-2001)
  • Delft Cluster project ‘Surface water Hydrology’ (2001-2005)
  • Delft Integrated Research Cluster (2003-2006)
  • third party sponsored PhD-research in advanced rainfall-runoff modeling.

Tom holds memberships of European Geosciences Union (EGU), International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and Dutch Hydrological Society (NHV).

Activities in project services

Project activities at ITC are in refresher courses such as ‘Geo-Informatics for Watershed Management’ (with special reference to Eastern Africa) and ITC research and consultancy projects such as SLARIM (Strengthening Local Authorities in Risk Management) and Dragon Training Courses.

Management

Tom was portfolio holder Education and member of the Management Team of the Department of Water Resources for the period 2005-2007. For the Water Resources Department he is involved in initiating and developing Joint Educational Programs (JEPs) with international partners in China. He is member of the Working Groups on curriculum development ‘Master of Science in Governance and Spatial Information Management’, a joined initiative between ITC and University of Twente.
