Resume of Dr. ir. C.M.M. (Chris) Mannaerts

Background

Chris M. Mannaerts is Associate Professor in Environmental Hydrology in the Department of Water Resources at ITC. His educational background includes an MSc degree in agricultural (physical) chemistry from Department of Agricultural Sciences of Ghent University in Belgium, a postgraduate MSc degree in environmental sanitation engineering from the Interdepartmental Centre of Environmental Sanitation and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (soil physics and hydrology) from the same university. From 1980 to 1987, he worked as a hydrologist for the UN/FAO in large reforestation and desertification control projects in West Africa. From mid 1987 until end 1991, he was watershed hydrology consultant for the Ministry of Forestry in Indonesia. He joined the Water Resources Surveys Division of ITC in 1992 as senior lecturer and later as associate professor Environmental Hydrology in 1997. He served as interim head of the newly formed Department of Water Resources from its inception in mid 2002 until 2005. Besides regular educational program inputs, research and management in ITC Enschede, he has executed a large number of short term consulting, knowledge transfer and research project assignments abroad across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America during his career (Please see below).

Activities in education

Current courses inputs in the ITC regular MSc programmes relate to the interdisciplinary science fields of ecohydrology and water quality, ecohydraulics of erosion and sedimentation, water pollution modelling & management. Emphasis is on spatial assessment, monitoring, remote sensing and GIS applications. He has been MSc course director of ITC Environmental Systems Analysis & Management program from 1993 until 1999 and has been involved in ITC's first international joint education programs with universities in Iran and Bolivia. He is a supervisor of MSc candidates (more than 30) and is currently promoter of 2 PhD researchers. He has been invited as guest professor or lecturer at various universities and institutions.

Activities in research

Using his dual scientific backgrounds in environmental chemistry and physical hydrology, research interests focus on the combined use of satellite observations with biogeochemical and hydrological data for an improved understanding of solid and solute transport processes by water and their impacts on water ecosystems, like rivers, lakes, reservoirs and coastal zones. Current research project support includes:

Estimating spatial patterns of erosion - sedimentation processes in the Andean region using geo information techniques, Bolivia, PhD research project, ITC promoter, 2002-2005, SAIL funded.
