Activities in research

At ITC, Dr. Maciek W. Lubczynski is a member of the research theme Water Cycle and Climate. His broad expertise in hydrogeology, hydrology, hydrogeophysics, remote sensing, numerical groundwater modelling, hydrological monitoring and in space and ground data acquisition and integration in models allowed him to make various original research contributions in four research direction lines:

  1. Tree transpiration mapping by upscaling of sap flow measurements using high resolution optical and radar remote sensing;
  2. Spatio-temporal assessment of groundwater fluxes i.e. recharge, groundwater transpiration and groundwater evaporation to improve groundwater balances;
  3. Parameterization of subsurface with Magnetic Resonance Sounding and other hydrogeophysical techniques;
  4. Development of new, modern data acquisition techniques in hydrological monitoring, remote sensing and hydrogeophysics and their integration in coupled hydrological models to improve groundwater management.

Current research projects

The current research of Dr. Lubczynski concentrates on hydrogeological and ecohydrological problems of dry, water limited environments. He currently carries on field investigations in Sardon and Carrizal catchments in Spain and in Jikhu Khola catchment in Nepal.

Study areas in Spain: Sardon area and Carrizal area both near Salamanca

developed by University of Salamanca, collaborator of ITC.

Sardon catchment (Spain) - the study area (~80 km2) is equipped with hydrological monitoring network since 1996. This particular study area was selected as the research study area (and fieldwork area for ITC students) because of:

  • Mediterranean climate typical for water limited environments;
  • natural environment with negligible human impact so for example suitable for studying climate change impact on water resources;
  • savanna type of vegetation with two different oak tree species (deciduous Quercus pyrenaica and evergreen Quercus ilex) allowing to study impact of trees on catchment water balance;
  • uniform geology - weathered and fractured granite;
  • shallow groundwater table allowing for relatively easy installation of piezometers and monitoring of groundwater;
  • proximity of academic town of Salamanca providing opportunity for scientific collaboration;
  • logistically convenient.

A - Eddy covariance tower to monitor total evapotranspiration;
B - Monitoring of sap flow in oak tree using Heat Field Deformation (HFD) and Thermal Dissipation Probe (TDP) methods;
C - Multi-parametric (head, temperature, EC) monitoring of unsaturated zone and groundwater table (nearby piezometer) to determine recharge and groundwater evapotranspiration.

The research objectives of the current Sardon research are formulated in the four PhD studies of Leonardo Reyes Acosta, Alain Pascal Frances, Tanvir Hassan and Enrico Balugani. The current monitoring network focuses on monitoring of: groundwater (water table and EC/Cl), unsaturated zone profiles (soil moisture, matric potential, temperature and EC/CL), microclimatic data (2 standard PET towers and one Eta eddy covariance tower) and sap flow of the trees (applying TDP and HFD methods). The research group of Dr Lubczynski focuses on integration of the temporal, field monitoring data with spatial remote sensing data such as: subsurface non-invasive hydrogeophysical methods (magnetic resonance sounding, electric resistivity tomography, ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic methods) and satellite and airborne images, all to improve the reliability of hydrological models. For joint projects and research collaboration please contact lubczynski@itc.nl.

Carrizal catchment (Spain, Fig. 2 & 4) - ~73 km2; heavily affected by human activity; large pressure on agricultural practices resulted in deforestation, decline of river discharge and overexploitation of groundwater utilized mainly for the irrigation purpose. The aim of the Carrizal research is formulated in the PhD study of Guido Baroncini Turricchia. The Carrizal catchment has monitoring network consisting of micro-climatic towers, soil moisture, river discharge and groundwater table monitoring. Besides, an extensive MRS measurements were carried out in Carrizal area to provide hydrogeological parameters for the numerical distributed groundwater model.

Carrizal landscape

Fig. 4: Carrizal landscape

Jikhu Khola catchment (Nepal) - ~111 km2, reforested land; thin layer of unconsolidated rocks underlain by sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The main objective of this study is to quantify the hydrological impact of reforestation - all the objectives are formulated in the PhD study of Chandra Ghimire. The methodology proposed involve monitoring of water balance components such as rainfall, evapotranspiration, interception, transpiration of trees, surface runoff, river discharge, unsaturated zone moisture, soil matric potential and groundwater level and their modeling using DHSVM model.

Former or less active research projects with active data processing

Botswana - 5 years Kalahari Research Project (2000-5); along this project two PhD students were supervised by Dr. Lubczynski. These were Dr. O. Obakeng and Dr. D. Chavarro who completed their studies in 2007 and 2009 respectively. The Kalahari research was carried out in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Botswana and concentrated in Serowe study area. The Kalahari research aimed at evaluation of the role of the transpiration of Kalahari vegetation upon groundwater recharge and overall water balance. The extensive hydrological monitoring, that included also sap flow measurements, proved large role of the Kalahari plants in water balance and also their extraordinary survival skills emphasized by very deep rooting systems, for some species exceeding even 70m. The data processing and paper writing is still continued.

Portugal - research on the "Application of modern data acquisition methods to improve reliability of numerical models" was carried out mainly in the Pisoes area; this area is strategic in Portugal because of: (i) fertile soils implying extensive agricultural practices and irrigation and (ii) productive gabro aquifer overlain by thin clay layer constraining recharge. The groundwater recharge was the main objective of this study. A combination of hydrogeophysical methods, very high resolution QuickBird image interpretation and hydrological monitoring allowed defining thickness and spatial distribution of the clay layer, then groundwater recharge and finally sustainability of groundwater resources by using coupled saturated and unsaturated zone model. This research was carried out in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Portugal and Technical University of Lisbon. The data processing and paper writing is still continued.

Poland - research on the "Application of modern data acquisition methods to improve reliability of numerical models" has been carried out in three study areas, Turawa lake catchment, Swidnica catchment and Ziebice catchment. The Turawa catchment and the monitoring network in this area was focused on the impact of the lake upon groundwater in adjacent areas and in the latter two catchments on the assessment of the water resources in the hydrogeologically complex, multilayered aquifers. This research has been carried out in collaboration with Wroclaw University. The data processing and paper writing is still continued.
