Background

I have an MSc in Physical Geography from Utrecht University (NL), and a PhD in Physical Geography from Utrecht University on tropical rainforest hydrology and the effects of logging in Guyana (1994), working for the Tropenbos foundation. After that I worked for 3.5 years at the Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in France where I developed the modelling tools for erosion of Loess soils under high intensity agriculture, and successfully obtained and assisted in the coordination of EU projects. From 1998 to 2006 I worked as researcher/lecturer at the Dept. of Physical Geography of the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University.

At present I am professor in Earth Surface Systems Analysis at the Department of Earth Systems Analysis at ITC, focusing on geohazards. This chair is embedded within the Faculty of Geosciences of the UU.

Activities in education

My teaching focusses on land degradation and spatial modelling of geohazards in the Applied Earth Sciences course, as well as a specialisation course in the Principles of Physical Process Modelling. Outside ITC I give guest lectures at Geosciences at the Utrecht University in the BSc and MSc courses, as well as at IHE and the TUD in Delft.

Research activities

At ITC I hold a chair in Disaster Management, one of the research themes at ITC (see http://www.itc.nl/research/themes/dman/default.asp), which aims i) at better prediction of Geohazards integrating spatial modelling and earth observation information, and ii) at a better integration of socio-economic factors and technical factors in risk assessment and disaster management.

The DMAN theme has research both in the "slow onset" disasters such as land degradation and desertification, and the sudden disasters such as earth quakes, land slides anf floods.
