Background

Marcel van Helvoirt (born in Amersfoort 1979, The Netherlands) started his MSc Applied Physics in 1997 at university of Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands and graduated in 2002. Subsequently, he did some research at ITC for the EOS department till the end of 2004 for a period of 9 months on the topic of infrasound as a precursor of earthquakes. Afterwards he did some web-application programming at a company for business software. In August 2005 he has returned to ITC at the Department Water Resources to start some scientific research on the topic of data assimilation for potential application in continental scale drought monitoring.

Activities in research

Marcel van Helvoirt is busy with the project: "Coupled Land-Atmosphere Modelling and Data Assimilation with Potential Application in Continental Scale Drought Monitoring and Prediction". He started in August 2005. Objective is to analyze modelled soil moisture, ground temperature and precipitation fields. He is focusing on data assimilation and numerical modelling of climate models to support the research on drought monitoring. Currently, he is continuing his contribution to the research on coupled Land-Atmosphere modelling and data assimilation techniques with MM5.
