Background

Laura Dente is a PhD student (Promovendus) at the Water Resources Department of ITC. She received the Laurea (equivalent to Master' s degree) in Physics from the University of Bari (Italy) in 2000. After a short experience at the Advanced Computer Systems company (Rome, Italy) developing software for SAR image processing, she worked in 2002 as Young Graduate Trainee at the European Space Agency in The Netherlands on the soil moisture retrieval from a time series of ERS SAR images. From 2003 to 2006 she worked as junior researcher at the Italian National Council of Research (CNR-ISSIA), where her main interests were the retrieval of leaf area index, biomass and soil moisture over agricultural areas from SAR images and the assimilation of this information into crop growth models. With the CNR-ISSIA she was involved in the ESA project n. 17011/02/NL/JA on "Development of SAR inversion algorithms for land applications" (2003-2005). Her research at ITC is mainly focused on the soil moisture retrieval at global scale from remote sensing data acquired by passive and active microwave sensors.
