Background

John Carranza holds degrees in geology (BSc, Adamson University, Philippines, 1983), mineral exploration (MSc, ITC, The Netherlands, 1994), and GIS-based mineral potential mapping (PhD, Centre for Technical Geoscience, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, 2002).

From 1983 to 2000, John Carranza was a geologist, then senior geologist and then supervising geologist in the Bureau of Mines and Geosciences of the Philippines, where he conducted (mainly as leader of) various projects involving geological mapping, stratigraphic studies, geo-hazard mapping, evaluation of industrial minerals, and geological-geochemical exploration of metallic deposits.

In 1998, he received the ITC Research Award for his paper (published in the Journal of Geochemical Exploration) on catchment basin analysis of geochemical anomalies.

From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a Researcher in the department of Earth Systems Analysis (ESA) of ITC, where he was co-principal investigator of research project for developing geospatial data infrastructure for mineral resource management, taught at post-graduate and graduate levels, and supervised MSc and PhD students.

From 2003 up to the present, John Carranza is Assistant Professor in the ESA department of ITC, where he teaches at post-graduate and graduate levels, supervise MSc and PhD students, and perform research on applications of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) to geological and mineral exploration.

He has published more than 40 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and more than 40 papers in international conference proceedings. He is author of the book Geochemical Anomaly and Mineral Prospectivity in GIS".

John Carranza is a member of the following associations:

• International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD)

He is a reviewer for many international geoscience journals dealing with spatial data analysis/integration for mapping of geochemical anomalies and/or mineral prospectivity (e.g. Computers & Geosciences, International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, Journal of Geochemical Exploration, Mathematical Geosciences, Natural Resources Research, Ore Geology Reviews, etc.)

Activities in education

John Carranza teaches the following subjects in the Applied Earth Sciences (AES) postgraduate diploma and MSc course of ITC:

• Principles of GIS (spatial data analysis and visualization)
• Geology of mineral deposits
• Mineral prospectivity mapping.

He used to teach, from 2003 to 2009, the following subjects in the joint course � Earth Resources and GIS Modeling � between the ESA department of ITC and the Geoscience Faculty of Utrecht University:

• Exploration geochemical data analysis
• Predictive modeling of geo-resource prospectivity.

Activities in research

John Carranza's research activities focus on developing expertise in spatial modeling of geo-resources (e.g. mineral deposits) and/or geo-environmental hazards (e.g. landslides, mine-induced contamination) through understanding of relevant earth systems/processes and application of GIS/RS. His main fields of specialization are:

• Spatial mathematics/statistics for predictive modeling of geo-resource prospectivity and geo-hazard susceptibility
• Geochemistry for mineral exploration and geo-environmental studies
• Remote sensing for geological and mineral exploration.

He belongs to the research group carrying out projects in Earth Systems Science, which is one of the research themes of ITC. He supervises research projects of MSc/PhD students. Since 2002, he has supervised 25 MSc students and seven PhD students.
