Membership

The formulation of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) 14 years ago is finally gaining a measure of recognition.

Membership of AARSE: The first major activity of the Association was aggressive membership drive. A modest result is achieved in this regard. From the 10 foundation members in August 1992, the membership of the Association rose to 101 ordinary members and 11 institutional members in May 1993. By the end of November 2 2006, the registered individual and institutional members of AARSE have grown to 925 and 70 respectively. Out of the 925 individual members, 797 are from 37 African countries and 128 are from 16 other countries. Similarly 54 out of the institutional members are from 23 African countries and 16 from 10 other countries.

Membership of Regional and International Organization: In the pursuance of the objectives of the Association, efforts were made to register the membership of AARSE with relevant regional and international organizations. So far it has gained recognition by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) and the international Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada. For almost four years after its inception, the IDRC financially supported the Association which was instrumental to its growth.

AARSE became a registered member of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in 1994 and formally received its membership certificate during the ISPRS congress held in Vienna, Austria in July 1996. Again in 1997, AARSE was coopted as a member of the Standing Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference in Africa. During this Conference, AARSE was honored by UN-ECA to be the umbrella organization for all activities in remote sensing, GIS and environment in Africa.

In the last few years, AARSE has worked closely with/and and received the support of many international institutions and organizations such as, the International Institute for Geoinformation Sciences & Earth Observation (ITC), UNOOSA, UNESCO, UN-FAO, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE/GRSS), the Canadian Space Agency (CAS), European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. In 2004, AARSE became an Organizational Member of GEO and has contributed towards the implementation of GEOSS. In 2005 and 2007, AARSE held two jointly organized (AARSE-ISPRS-IEEE-OGC-University of Johannesburg) GEOSS Workshops, in South Africa and Burkina Faso. Its active participation in the International Council for Science (ICSU) - Regional Office for Africa, UNESCO-GOOSE Programme, GSDI, AFREF, UNECA CODI-Geo, UNEDRA, MAfA and other initiatives in the African Continent and the unparalleled open support it enjoys from various remote sensing and GIS institutions and governments in Africa is a reflection of its success and commitments to the betterment of Africa. This is not just about prestige. There is recognition that space is an essential tool for decision making and it is a useful tool for Africa. These are no isolated developments. Across Africa, there are more than twenty national space agencies (also referred to as national remote sensing agencies), and there are also regional centers and universities with special expertise in this area. Nearly all are connected (as institutional members) to AARSE.
