The African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) is a registered NGO Incorporated under Section 21of the South African Companies Act (Act 61 of 1973)

    AARSE is a non-political scientific organization. The formulation of National Professional Associations in Geoinformation across African countries and the establishment of appropriate scientific commissions are our goal.

The African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) was formed in August 1992 during an international conference organized by the United Nations in cooperation with the Government of the United States of America on "satellite remote sensing for resources management, Environmental Assessment and Global Changes Studies: Needs and Applications of Developing Countries" held in Boulder, Colorado, USA.

The need to form the Association was informed by several reasons including:

  • The reported benefits being derived from the application of remote sensing and the contribution being made towards the indigenous development of these technologies by the participants from other countries;
  • The prevailing low level contribution of the natural resources to the socioeconomic development of most African countries;
  • The resource and environmental management practice in Africa, resulting in unprecedented depletion, destruction and degradation of the resource base; and
  • The inadequate human and institutional capacity to redress the situation in order to evolve a sustainable development strategy.

It was against these and other considerations that the ten African participants at the conference decided to form a continental, professional, non-governmental association with the name "African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE)." The membership of the Association was agreed to be open to any individual and institution/organization engaged in the development and practice of remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and environment as well as those individuals and institutions/organizations interested in the development, application and products of these geo-information technologies in their respective areas of operation.
