In many African countries, the desire to meet the livelihood needs of people has led to unsound exploitation of natural resources. Improved natural resource management to mitigate environmental problems is a major task confronting planners and decision makers at all levels. In recent years, there has arisen an increased awareness and understanding of the importance of geographic information and its application to support decision-making in natural resources and landscape management in Ghana and other countries of Africa. Many organizations at national, regional and district levels need staff who are capable of providing technical expertise in the application of geo-information tools for resource management purposes.
This three month course introduces the principal concepts and techniques of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS). The course consists of three interrelated parts: a theoretical part which focuses on the concepts, a practical part which aims at developing hands-on skills in using software tools, and an application oriented part in which participants learn how to design and carry out sequential data processing steps for solving typical application problems in natural resources management.
The course is developed and implemented through the cooperation between Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana and ITC.
