Phases in graduate study

Phase 0

  • Qualifier phase
  • 0-6 months (strict end-date)
  • Prepare full research proposal and plan
  • Public defence
  • Examination by steering committee chaired by senior supervisor (promotor-designate)

Phase 1

  • 7-12 months (flexible end-date)
  • If recommended by senior supervisor, registration in Netherlands university and/or graduate school
  • Fulfil specified activities per training and supervision plan
  • Prepare research progress report, compare progress to plan
  • Performance and progress assessment by a steering committee

Phase 2

  • 13-24 months (flexible end-date)
  • Fulfil specified activities per training and supervision plan
  • Prepare research progress report, compare progress to plan
  • Performance and progress assessment by a steering committee

Phase 3

  • Month 25 onward
  • Complete research per plan
  • Initiate the procedure for the award of PhD degree (promotion)
  • Draft, finalize and submit PhD thesis
  • Examination and oral defence (promotion)
