  • Module 1:
Introduction to laboratory facilities to new students
  • Module 7:
Laboratory practical training for water quality analysis including field methods for the courses in Water Resources and Environmental Management courses.
  • Module 11:
Final topic choice “Applied Geochemistry” for the postgraduate diploma course in Applied Earth Sciences course
  • Module 11:
Water Resources and Environmental Management courses “Hydrologic and Environmental Modeling”

Regular MSc research PhD related activities

  • Around module 15:
MSc fieldwork prepartaion for the courses in Water Resources and Environmental Management and Applied Earth Sciences
  • Autumn till the end of the year:
Analysis of sample material collected by students in the Water Resources and Environmental Management and Applied Earth Sciences courses

A number of PhD researchers from the Earth Systems Analysis, Natural Resource Survey and Water Resources  departments are using lab facilities for activities ranging from very simple sample treatment procedures to complicated tests and analytical procedures.

Examples of activities

More information on PhD research can be found in the

Determining the swelling clay capacities Angular scanning sphere for the ASD field spectrometer
Ms. Fekerte Yitagesu, department of Earth Systems Analysis determining the swelling clay capacities of her soil samples from Ethiopia Angular scanning sphere for the ASD field spectrometer as developed for the research of Ms Mila Luleva, department of Earth Systems Analysis
Investigating beach sands Denitrification tests on soils
Nima Moin, department of Natural Resources, investigating beach sands during  his earlier MSc research on nesting beaches of See turtles the Greek islands of Crete and Zakythnos Ms. Mariela Yevenes from the department of Water Resources and Ms. Fransiska Gamises carry out denitrification tests on soils over a longer period
Calibrating soil moisture meter Raindrop energy measurement device
Leonardo Reyes and Alain Frances from the department of Water Resources calibrate their soil moisture meter in the lab before taking it to Spain Juan Francisco Sanchez from the department of Water Resources re-developed a raindrop energy measurement device to compare with modern measuring instruments
Field spectrometric measurements GER 3700 field spectrometer
After field spectrometric measurements Ms. Si Yalidepartment of Natural Resources dried grass samples from Groningen which will be further analysed in an external laboratory The GER 3700 field spectrometer remains a valuable tool for measuring reflection in the visible and NIR range on vegetation
