Earth systems science (ESS)
This research theme in earth system science strives at developing algorithms to model earth observation data supported by field measurements and subsurface imaging to understand earth science processes. In particular the research aims at contributing to a better understanding of use of earth observation data and geoinformation science for georesources management (exploration and exploitation), environmental geosciences and geodynamics. Hence a strong focus is on the use of state of the art earth observation using multi- and hyperspectral sensors (in the optical and thermal windows), InSAR, satellite gravity, airborne geophysical and hyperspectral measurements, in conjunction with field measurements on outcrops (spectroscopic, geochemical, geological) and shallow subsurface measurements (e.g., geophysical techniques). Research topics frequently use ITC's geochemical, geophysical and spectroscopic laboratory facilities to validate earth observation model data.
