Suspension of registration

A graduate student facing an unforeseen need to interrupt his/her studies for more that one month may request a suspension of registration. A research assistant (AiO) should also contact P&O. For a shorter period, the graduate student should seek permission for a short-term absence, during which registration is maintained.

During suspension of registration the graduate student does not continue research and receives no supervision, facilities, fellowship, accommodation, etc. The period of suspension does not count in the overall study duration and key dates, such as completion of future phases of the study, are postponed accordingly.

Reasonable grounds for a suspension of registration include protracted illness of the graduate student or a very close family member, resolution of complicated family matters, maternity leave, etc. Where applicable, the permission of the fellowship provider and/or partner organization should also be sought.

Repeated suspensions are not acceptable and graduate students who cannot dedicate themselves sufficiently to research studies, for whatever reason, will be asked to reconsider their registration.
