Nature Geoscience Publishes Correspondence of Xiaogang Ma
Xiaogang Ma’s correspondence Data exchange facilitated co-authored by his PhD supervisors and colleagues is published online in Nature Geoscience (4, 814 (2011) | doi:10.1038/ngeo1335).
The correspondence was published on 30 November 2011 the day Xiaogang defended his PhD dissertation Ontology Spectrum for Geological Data Interoperability.
In the article Xiaogang and his co-authors positively comment on points of data archiving discussed in an original article. Then they extend the discussion from data archiving to interoperability of data, and urge that

local geoscience data archives will run the risk of becoming separate islands in a data deluge.
Two recent geoscience data sharing projects, OneGeology and OneGeology-Europe, are introduced in the article and their successful experiences are discussed. The project OneGeology-Europe is closely related to the European Union directive INSPIRE for establishing a pan-European infrastructure of spatial information.
