ITC Alumni gathering Accra, Ghana

28 October 2008

During the 5th AARSE Conference in Accra, Ghana, a very successful alumni meeting was organized. Having the advantage of the international gathering, many alumni from across the region could attend.

In a beautiful setting of the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra and on a balmy evening around the pool, some 100 alumni and ITC staff met on the 28th of October. It was good to see the re-establishing of still warm contacts between old class-mates. Seeing familiar faces again the reuniting brought back many good memories at ITC, as well as bringing the opportunity to re-establish useful and up to date networks.

Enjoying plentiful served drinks and snacks the evening was further graced with some speeches and anecdotes, reliving the past and glancing into the future. The ITC rector, Professor Molenaar took the opportunity to not only thank the many alumni for their presence, but also to give a brief sneak-peak into the near future, in which the long established institute will join the University of Twente. ITC’s previous rector, Professor Karl Harmsen, was on his present home turf in his present position as Director of UNU-INRA, but also and clearly thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to dive back into his past.

Two ITC alumni voiced the feeling of all present that being professionally groomed at ITC is something to be proud of and is a big advantage in pursuing one’s professional career.  Because such a gathering was felt extremely important in maintaining the unique ITC network, the establishing of a Ghanaian alumni initiative was announced. After this encouraging news the rector concluded the evening.

All in all, the alumni gathering in Accra was a great success and once again showed the absolute significance of these social gatherings.
