State of the internet 2011

The Internet is a strange, huge beast. It is getting bigger, faster and more mobile each day. Ferocious social networks fight each other to be on top and gain more of our attention and personal information. An entire economy is generated from our browsing habits.

Click here to launch an infographic on internet and its impact:

www.onlineschools.org/state-of-the-internet/soti.html

While the Internet has an amazing reach, it still has room to grow. While 71% of the people in developed countries are online, only 21% of those in developing countries have access so far. In spite of such regional disparities, the Internet continues to become faster and more affordable overall. As the number of users increases, so does the sheer amount of money, information and opinions exchanged online. When it comes to the Internet's future, most specialists are optimistic: 64% of them believe the flow of information online will remain mostly free rather than falling under the control of powerful institutions and 81% believe the Internet will enhance human intelligence.

Problem Web of Science and Internet Explorer 9.0 (compatibility issue)

The search results might not load completely when you access Web of Knowledge in Internet Explorer 9. Please note that the databases on Web of Knowledge platform do not support Internet Explorer 9.

So please try to access the platform using a browser that is compatible. The below link will provide you the list of browsers that are supported:
http://images.isiknowledge.com/WOKRS410B4/help/WOS/whatsnew_wos.html#system_requirements

The product development team of Thomson is working on it with high priority; however they are unable to give a timeframe on when this would be fixed.

Microsoft itself gives the following solution on their website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956197
Enable Compatibility View for specific websites in Internet Explorer

To enable Compatibility View for specific websites that are not displayed correctly or that are not working correctly, follow these steps:

  1. Open the website that is not displayed correctly or that does not work correctly in Internet Explorer 8 or in Internet Explorer 9.
  2. Click the Compatibility View button that is located directly to the right side of the address bar next to the Refresh button.

Or, on the Tools menu, click to select the option Compatibility View. If the Tools menu is not displayed, press ALT to display the Tools menu.

Notes

  • If the Compatibility View button does not appear on the right side of the address bar, or if the command is not available under the Tools menu, you cannot use this method. You may be experiencing a different problem, or the network administrator may have used a Group Policy setting to configure the Compatibility View settings on your computer.
  • If this method worked, you may have to repeat this method for each website that experiences these problems.

Note When you use this method to fix a website, Internet Explorer saves your Compatibility View setting for that website. Every time that you visit that site, Compatibility View will be used.

To stop a website from running in Compatibility View, follow these steps:

  1. Click Tools, and then click to select option Compatibility View.

  2. You can also add or remove specific websites from Compatibility View without actually visiting each website.

Africa

Africa is the premier journal devoted to the study of African societies and culture. Editorial policy encourages an interdisciplinary approach, involving humanities, social sciences, and environmental sciences. Africa aims to give increased attention to African production of knowledge, highlighting the work of local African thinkers and writers, emerging social and cultural trends 'on the ground', and links between local and national levels of society. At the same time, it maintains its commitment to the theoretically informed analysis of the realities of Africa's own cultural categories. Each issue contains six or seven major articles, arranged thematically, extensive review essays and substantial book reviews. Special issues are published annually.

ASPRS Journal Seeks Applications Articles and Proposal for Special Issues

Letter from PE&RS Editor-in-Chief Russ Congalton

Dear ASPRS Members and Readers of Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing,

The Editorial Team of Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS) has been working hard to better meet the needs of our readers. One of my major goals when I became Editor-in-Chief in January, 2008 was to reduce the time between final acceptance of a paper and it appearing in the journal. We have accomplished this goal by putting electronic pre-print versions of papers on the ASPRS website as soon as they are available and we have reduced the actual time of publication. Currently, the queue is at 6-7 months.

Go to PE&RS, instructions for peer-reviewed papersIn addition, in response to member feedback, we want to have an "Applications" article published in every issue. "Applications" papers will emphasize a specific application or practical aspect of our profession and will be reviewed using slightly different criteria than the other peer-reviewed papers. The review of our other papers includes evaluating if the method or technique presented is new or innovative. "Applications" papers will not need to meet that requirement. However, "Applications" papers must be timely and relevant and can not simply be the presentation of a well-established technique or method. This article will be peer-reviewed and will be the last article in the peer-reviewed section of the journal. The goal of this paper will be to provide a focus for practical and applied research results to our readers. Many of our peer-reviewed papers already have a practical and/or applied focus while many also have a theoretical nature. The monthly "Applications" paper will provide an easily indentified paper that anyone interested in the applied or practical aspects of our profession should read. To submit an "Applications" paper, the complete instructions for peer-reviewed papers is online at http://www.asprs.org/society/committees/jpc/jpc_instr.html.

Finally, we are happy to invite those of you who are interested to become the guest editor of a Special Issue. Special Issues are an important component of PE&RS so if there is a topic or theme that you think would make a great Special Issue we encourage you to submit a proposal. To propose a theme for a Special Issue, and/or to serve as Guest Editor for such Special Issues, please submit a short written proposal to me at russ.congalton@unh.edu for approval before proceeding. This proposal must include your contact information, the specific subject of the Special Issue, a short justification of why this should be a Special Issue, and any other pertinent information.

We are excited about continuing to meet all of our members needs with a variety of information contained within PE&RS every month. Thanks to all of you who contribute articles, review articles, or serve in other ways to make our journal effective.

Russell G. Congalton
Editor-in-Chief, Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing

The Open Access Week Challenge

11-15 October 2010

Open Access Week 2010 is entering its fourth year, and is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.

This year the Open Access Week will be held from 11 to 15 October in the Netherlands.

ITC Faculty wants to pay attention to Open Access Week 2010 on October 11 in the auditorium with two lectures staring 11:00 hrs. Information stands will be situated close to the auditorium and the rest of the week in the library.

You can see both lectures and discussion here:

The Open Access Week Challenge from the Library of ITC-Utwente on Vimeo.

Programme

At 11.00 Prof. Dr. John Mackenzie Owen, professor of information science from the University of Amsterdam will give a lecture with the title: Open Access - promises and pitfalls.

Open Access is a way to eliminate the cost of scientific publications for end-users and their institutions. Open Access could therefore lead to free access to information for all. However, there are many obstacles to achieving this goal, and the road to full open access is not free from pitfalls. In this presentation I shall briefly introduce the concept and background of Open Access, provide an overview of current developments, and discuss some of the major issues, both positive and negative. I shall put special emphasis on aspects that are relevant to developing countries as the possibly chief beneficiaries of Open Access in the long run.

After this lecture, approx.11:45, Wim van de Stelt, Executive Vice President Business Development Springer, will present a lecture with the promising title: Every Dutch corresponding author can publish Open Access in a Springer journal, the libraries pay the fee!

Springer is the second largest scientific Publisher in the world with 2200 journals and 6500 books published annually. Springer has a pragmatic approach to Open Access, if Open Access is a model that our customers (scientists, libraries, universities, funders) want or need. We are happy to provide it, as long as it is sustainable. As a result Springer has a suite of Open Access opportunities for scientists: liberal green policies, Springer Open Choice and Springer Open. Wim van der Stelt will discuss these different models and explain how authors from Dutch universities can take advantage of them. He will also reveal some background on Open Access policies and strategies of a large commercial publisher, and is looking forward to an open discussion about all aspects of the future of scholarly communication.

For this programme all UT researchers are also invited.

Ephorus version 4

The new version of Ephorus has been released on August 5th 2010.
Ephorus version 4 has new design and many new features for instructors and key users. Many improvements will be introduced that will make Ephorus even easier to use!

A number of updates and expansions will improve the results of the plagiarism scan for all Ephorus users, including instructors that use Ephorus via a digital learning environment.

The most important new features are:

General

New design   Ephorus will get a new, fresh design.

Better results   Ephorus will use more sources in the report. Furthermore, a number of updates in the backend of the application will make the plagiarism scan more effective.

Online help   All manuals, tutorials and FAQs will be available in the web application (from August).

My Documents

Document management   Instructors can rename, move and mark documents. It will also be possible to perform actions on multiple document, for example archiving an entire folder.

Folder management    It will be possible to add and manage folders, and to link a hand-in code to a folder. This way, the instructor can select in which folder submitted documents are stored.  This will also remove the need to request new hand-in codes for new courses, since existing hand-in codes can be linked to a new folder!

More documents per page   25, 50 or 100 documents can be shown per page.

New documents are marked as "unread"   Instructors can mark documents as "read" or "unread".

Download documents and/or reports   Documents and reports can be downloaded easily as a ZIP file.

Upload

Multiple document upload   Instructors can select as many documents and ZIP files to upload as they want.

Entering title no longer required   If no title is entered, the document’s filename will be used as title. It will still be possible to enter another title for the document.

Reports

Exclude quotes   Possible quotes are marked in the report. Instructors can "accept" quotes to exclude them from the report and the scores.

Better display of similarities   The use of a new colour scheme makes the report easier to read when printed in black and white, and easier to read for people with colour blindness.

Overlapping sources are grouped   Sources reporting the same section of text will be grouped.

Science to be: arXiv        http://arxiv.org/

arXiv is a highly-automated electronic archive and distribution server for research articles. Covered subject areas include physics, mathematics, computer science, nonlinear sciences, quantitative biology, quantitative finance and statistics. arXiv is maintained and operated by the Cornell University Library with guidance from the arXiv Advisory Board and the help of numerous subject moderators.

Goals and Mission

arXiv is an openly accessible, moderated repository for scholarly articles in specific scientific disciplines. Material submitted to arXiv is expected to be of interest, relevance, and value to those disciplines. arXiv reserves the right to reject or reclassify any submission. Submissions are reviewed by expert moderators to verify that they are topical and refereeable scientific contributions that follow accepted standards of scholarly communication (as exemplified by conventional journal articles).

As an electronic archive, arXiv makes a commitment to provide persistent access to all announced submissions. arXiv is thus maintained with a focus on the perpetual availability of submissions. This is accomplished in part by controlling the types of files that can be uploaded to arXiv, as well as restricting changes that can be made after submissions are announced. In order to preserve the scholarly record, submissions are not removed from arXiv after they have been announced.

arXiv is proud to be able to offer such a large collection of scholarly work in a single location, without any fees and with support for users around the world. arXiv supplements the traditional publication system by providing immediate dissemination and open access to scholarly articles (which often later appear in conventional journals). It is important to note, however, that arXiv is not a repository for otherwise unpublishable material, nor is it a refereed publication venue. The moderation process is essential to ensuring that submissions are of value to the arXiv communities, but there is also a limit to the ability of administrators and moderators to provide feedback on submissions that are determined to be inappropriate for arXiv.

As a user, your primary interactions with arXiv will likely be to browse and view articles, and perhaps also to submit articles. Submitting articles requires registration as a user, whereas browsing can be done without registration, on either the main arXiv.org site (http://arxiv.org/) or on any of arXiv's mirror sites around the world (http://arxiv.org/servers.html).

"Less pretension, more ambition. Development aid that makes a difference"

Last Monday the WRR report "Minder pretentie, meer ambitie. Ontwikkelingshulp die verschil maakt" was presented to the Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation, Bert Koenders, at the international press centre Nieuwspoort in The Hague.

Opinion research shows that development aid still enjoys great support among the Dutch population. Why do we give development aid, and does it actually help? What do we know about development programmes and the ability to contribute to them as outsiders? How relevant is aid today, now that other financial flows such as remittances and foreign direct investment (FDI) have increased as a result of globalisation? And how much influence does policy focused on other themes such as climate, migration, trade, security and knowledge, have on poor countries?

In 'Less pretension, more ambition', which is based on almost five hundred interviews in the field together with an extensive literature study, the WRR formulates recommendations for changes in the organisation of development aid and in the way in which public goods are cared for, and argues for structural attention for areas that are relevant for development aid.

WRR report no. 84 (only in Dutch) on development cooperation is digitally available from: http://www.wrr.nl/content.jsp?objectid=5213

Dutch national website providing information for academic about the advantages of Open Access to publicly financed research

Open Access to Scholarly Information; greater reach for Research

Dutch higher education institutions believe that radical improvements need to be made in Open Access to knowledge, information, and data. Online research and scholarly communication opens up opportunities that are still underutilised. Improved access creates a solid basis for the transfer of knowledge in education, knowledge generation for research, and knowledge valorisation for society. The central idea is that the results of publicly financed research should be available to the public.

This website showcases new opportunities in scholarly communication, advocates changes that recognize the potential of the networked digital environment, and encourages active participation by scholars and researchers to guide the course of change.

Springer Usage Growth in Developing Countries Initiatives.

(21/10/2009)

Research4Life is the collective name for three partnerships (HINARI, AGORA and OARE) which seek to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals by providing the developing world with access to critical scientific and social science research.

This project is “Perhaps the biggest step ever taken towards reducing the health information gap between rich and poor countries”, according to former WHO Director-General Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland. According to a survey in 2000, one of the key problems for health researchers in developing countries was access to subscription journal literature. The World Health Organization approached Yale University about this problem, and in cooperation with publishers like Springer, HINARI was launched in 2002. Nowadays the Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) provides access to over 5,500 peerreviewed journals, of which 568 are published by Springer related to Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.
