Introducing Ingenta Connect

Open Ingenta Connect

Ingenta has been launched in May 1998 and covers a comprehensive collection of academic and professional publications. It searches through more than 15,000,000 articles from over 28,000 publications.

For a quick introduction on using Ingenta, you can refer to:
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/about/researchers/about_ingentaconnect and/or
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/about/researchers/search_and_browse.

You can search Ingenta by:

  • Online articles: articles available electronically.
  • Uncover plus: articles available by fax or Ariel (some articles available electronically may also be available via uncover plus.)

A search on Ingenta will default to online articles. If you do not find the article you require, select the uncover plus tab for further articles.

You may browse publications by:

  • Subject
  • Alphabetical list of publications
  • List of publications by publisher

Within ITC you only have access to the bibliographic information of the articles. For the full text you have to purchase the article individually via Ingenta or use other ITC sources.

Search possibilities

A Quick Search is a search by title, keyword, and abstract. You may move from box to box on the search screen using the tab key, filling in details as appropriate. All search fields are case insensitive.

You can also search Ingenta by:

  • Article title
  • Author names; for example: Davis or Davis, JP.
  • Publication title and ISSN
  • Year range/date
  • Volume/Issue

Mind:

  • In the Publication Title field no operators or wildcards are allowed.
  • Exact Publication Title means that the search string must be an exact match with the publication title.
  • ISSN; the search string must be an exact match of the ISSN number. White space is ignored.
  • Year Range/Since Date; only one of these fields may be used.

The following items can be used when searching:

  • Use the operators AND, OR, NOT to refine your search.
For example: turbine and efficiency and not steam, can be shortened to turbine efficiency not steam. This will find articles with the words 'turbine' and 'efficiency' but excludes those containing 'steam'.
  • Use parentheses (brackets) to group search terms.
For example, river and (otter or stoat) finds articles containing 'river' plus 'otter', and/or 'stoat'.
  • Use quotes ("") to define phrases.
For example, "convex mirror" finds the two words only if they are next to each other in the article title.
  • Use asterisks (*) to abbreviate a search term.
This allows you to specify only the first part of a word. Any word in an article title that starts the same way is matched. For example, categor* matches 'category' and 'categories' etc.
