Introducing Dawsonera EBooks
Dawsonera is web-based collection of e-books designed for use in libraries. There are many thousands of e-books in the catalogue, published by academic publishers around the world but ITC purchased a selection of e-books to create a tailored collection of e-books for our library users.
The reader portal is where ITC staff and students can access the ITC collection of e-books. It is possible to search the whole catalogue of e-books of Dawsonera so including the ones ITC has not bought.
It is possible to download e-books that the library 'owns'. To download, go to the full title display by clicking on the "for more information…" button beneath the e-book. You have to select the number of days that you would like to download the e-book for. The maximum is 7 days. Click on the "download" button and wait until the automatic download starts. This can take some time. After you have downloaded an e-book you need to open it once while you are connected to your network in order to activate the time stamp. After you have done this, you can disconnect from the network and read as normal for as long as the time stamp is activated. Please note that you can NOT print or copy from downloaded e-books!
Personal Account
You need to have a personal account to get an online 5 minute preview of not owned (purple) e-books and export the references of the not owned e-books to Endnote and to copy and print from the owned (green) e-books.
The easiest the way to directly create an account is by clicking on "my favourites". Choose for the option to create an account "here". Fill in the complete form and follow the instructions on the screen. After that you will return to the login screen where you need to fill in the mail address you entered before with the password you just created.
You can print a part of the owned (green) e-books. The maximum is 5% per e-book, per user. To print, go to the "read online" version of the e-book. You need to login if you didn’t do that already. Go to the page you want to print and then on the left side of the screen click on the purple "print" button. Under the button a message will appear, click on "ok" and the page will be printed. You can only print one page at the time. Please note that Dawsonera will keep track of the number of pages you downloaded from an e-book and when you reached the maximum prints from an e-book you can never print anything out of this e-book again.
Copy
You can copy a part of the owned (green) e-books. The maximum is 5 % per e-book, per user. To copy, go to the "read online" version of the e-book. You need to login if you’re didn’t do that already. Go to the page you want to copy from and then on the left side of the screen click on the orange "copy" button. Under the button a message will appear, click on "ok". Now you can select text to copy on that page and when you then click right mouse button, there will be an option to "copy" this. Please note that Dawsonera will keep track of the number of pages you copied from per e-book and when you reached the maximum copies from an e-book you can never copy anything out of this e-book again.
Dawsonera has been developed to be user friendly but there is also a user guide available: for more information click here.
