PhD students require financial support for their research at ITC. This support needs to meet the costs of travel to/from the Netherlands, accommodation, health insurance and other living costs in the Netherlands, direct research costs, and tuition, residence permit and study permit fees; the amounts are detailed in the PhD Protocol. Prospective applicants for PhD research at ITC who have not already secured this funding may wish to consider applying for a fellowship.

Fellowships are available for professionals, coming from 56 developing countries (see the country list below). Fellowships need to be linked closely to institutional development. In practice, this means that applications will only be taken into consideration when they are supported by the employer of the candidate. The NFP is financed from the portion of the Netherlands national budget that is earmarked for development cooperation. The goals of the Netherlands development cooperation are to combat poverty, contribute to sustainable development and help improve the position of women. Investments in education are seen as a key instrument in attaining these three goals. To be eligible for an NFP fellowship, an applicant must be a national of one of the following countries:

The Huygens Programme awards scholarships that enable foreign students to study or do research in the Netherlands for a period of three to ten months. Candidates are selected on the basis of several criteria, the first of which is that they are from one of the 53 countries with which the Dutch government has concluded agreements to encourage international cooperation in culture and education.

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (www.worldbank.org/scholarships)
The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from developing countries, and preparing a doctoral thesis in a subject related to development. Research grants cover residence costs in a university or research center in a member country of the World Bank other than the home country or country of residence of the candidate. Fellowships are awarded for a period of five to ten months and must be completed between July 2008 and June 2009. The maximum amount of the grant is US$25,000.
Application forms and Information about the application procedure are available on the World Bank Scholarships Program website: www.worldbank.org/scholarships. Completed application packages must be received in Washington, D.C., by April 30, 2008. The awards will be announced in June/July 2008.

The African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) (http://accfp.pass-africa.org)
The African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) aims to support African professionals, researchers and graduate students to undertake activities that will enhance their capacities for advancing and applying knowledge for climate change adaptation in Africa. A variety of Fellowship types are offered to support projects, research, and other activities that advance adaptation in Africa. The Fellowships range in duration from 2-18 months, and award amounts range from USD $5,000 - $36,000, depending on Fellowship type. Eligibility is limited to citizens of member states of the African Union who are 40 years of age or younger.
