TELEIOS Second User Community Workshop - Germany

This invitation is addressed to experts from the international Earth Observation (EO) community who are interested in influencing current developments for improving the accessibility of satellite data. It will be of specific interest for EO data providers or operators of large archives and the multimedia search engine R&D community.

Context

Earth observation data have increased considerably over the last decades with satellite sensors collecting and transmitting back to Earth several terabytes of data per day. This data acquisition rate is a major challenge to existing data management, exploitation and dissemination approaches used by various agencies such as ESA, NASA and European national space agencies. The availability of earth observation data now outstrips the availability of human intelligence to exploit it.

TELEIOS is a 3-year funded European project, which started on 1st September 2010 with the aim to create an earth observatory infrastructure for satellite data and applications that makes the available petabytes of satellite data easily accessible by an even larger group of end user applications.

For more details on the project's objectives, the core research challenges addressed and the current status of work, please refer to the website.

Scope of the Workshop

In the 1st TELEIOS User Community workshop that took place at ESRIN in Italy, we concentrated on presenting the vision of TELEIOS to a selected group of experts from the international Earth Observation community, and on collaboratively capturing the requirements of this community with respect to the infrastructure to be developed in TELEIOS. In the 2nd TELEIOS User Community Workshop we will present an intermediate snapshot of the TELEIOS developments

  • to inform users on the evolution and status of TELEIOS
  • to demonstrate the implemented system (or system components) and receive feedback from the users on their usability
  • to demonstrate and to discuss the effectiveness and applicability of innovative methods for improving the access to EO data
  • to collect suggestions and requirements for the system evaluation that will be performed by the end of the project (3rd User Community Workshop in 2013)

To this end, the major part of the Workshop will be organized in small working groups that provide the opportunity for hands-on experiences and focused discussions.
